It is a branch of health care that specializes in improving the level of functions and health of the cardiopulmonary system, which is responsible for treating, examining and rehabilitating patients with acute or chronic respiratory diseases. This specialty is considered one of the most important and newest ancillary medical specialties that have necessitated the great development in medicine over the past decades and the increase in cardiopulmonary diseases, which has led to highlighting the role of the respiratory care specialist in the importance of providing respiratory care services to patients with acute or chronic respiratory diseases through evaluation and diagnosis through treating, following up and rehabilitating patients under direct or indirect supervision by doctors.
It is one of the academic departments at the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences and is considered the first academic department in a public university in Yemen. It contains two academic programs:

  1. Bachelor of Respiratory Care: The study in this program extends for 4 academic years + an internship year, with a total number of credit hours 153. This program qualifies students to build their career as respiratory care specialists.
    The current situation, with the spread of the Corona virus, has proven the importance and necessity of preparing specialized cadres in respiratory care to combat this virus and save lives.
    The student will be able to learn health and clinical skills through practical and clinical application in campus laboratories supported by the highest technology and high-resolution simulation devices that embody sick cases from the reality of working in the field of respiratory care and intensive care units, in addition to clinical training in hospitals, intensive care units, and respiratory and rehabilitation care units under the supervision of faculty members and clinical trainers specialized in respiratory care and with high experience.
  2. Master of Respiratory Care: This program is considered the first Master’s program in Respiratory Care in the Middle East, where the holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care can continue postgraduate studies. The study in the program extends for 4 semesters (two academic years) distributed between theoretical lectures and clinical training in hospitals, intensive care units, and respiratory and rehabilitation care departments, under the supervision of faculty members and clinical consultants specialized in respiratory care and in various medical specialties and are highly experienced.

With a total of 80 credit hours, this program qualifies students to build their professional and academic career as senior respiratory care specialists

Graduate Specifications

Upon graduation, the student must be able to

  1. Prepare and equip the various types of ventilators, follow up on their maintenance in the critical intensive care department, make the necessary changes to them according to the patient’s condition, and build a treatment strategy by making the necessary adjustments to ensure the stability of blood gases and thus protect the lungs and heart.
  2. Connect ventilators to patients in need and calibrating the devices, the required readings, and the breathing method.
  3. Take arterial blood samples to analyze, read and interpret blood gases and adjust the ventilator settings on the device if necessary.
  4. Work with the rest of the medical team to examine patients suffering from acute crises of shortness of breath. The respiratory therapist undertakes the process of withdrawing blood from the artery to measure the level of blood gases and protect the respiratory tract, in order to ensure that the patient receives an adequate amount of air and oxygen, as well as inserting a breathing tube. In addition to the artificial placement in the trachea through the nose or mouth if required.
  5. Train patients with asthma, pneumonia, and chronic bronchitis on the use of bronchodilator medications, and measuring their response to them.
  6. Perform chest exercises for patients who suffer from the accumulation of phlegm in the airways, in order to ensure normal breathing, as well as follow up on cases that need to occur after surgical operations.
  7. Participation and rapid intervention for cases of respiratory insufficiency within the hospital.
  8. Be an essential member of cardiopulmonary resuscitation as well as in the event of disasters (Cod Blue & Cod Yellow).
  9. Contribute to raise awareness and educate patients and their families in the various aspects concerned with the prevention of respiratory diseases and provide appropriate methods for using treatments for respiratory diseases.
  10. Transfer patients undergoing artificial respiration to and from another hospital.
  11. Follow-up of cases suffering from respiratory problems in the nursery and preterm care department, as well as follow-up of patients suffering from respiratory diseases in inpatient departments.
  12. Follow-up of patients who have a tracheostomy continuously until it is closed.
  13. Perform a lung function test.
  14. Do steam therapy sessions.
  15. Conducting pulmonary atelectasis removal sessions using the IPPB positive pressure device.
  16. Work in the sleep laboratory to diagnose some respiratory disorders associated with sleep.
  17. Diagnose some diseases related to the respiratory system and sleep disorders through lung function recording and sleep tests.
  18. Do home follow-up of patients with chronic respiratory diseases and work in programs to combat and treat smoking.
  19. Contributing to community awareness of common respiratory diseases and educating them in multiple aspects.
